The Marius-Barbeau Documentation Center is happy to be partners with The Canadian Museum of Civilisation in its project « Marius Barbeau, a Canadian hero and his period 1883-1969 ».

We wish to acknowledge the financial support of the Department of Canadian Heritage through Canadian Culture Online.

On that site, Heritage Canada displays a sampling from a wealth of documents relating the history of the two dance companies.

Calushari (Romania)
Choreographer: Theodor Vasilescu
This dance reproduces magical dance rituals executed at Whitsun to ward off the wrath of evil geniuses, deemed responsible for summer solstice atmospheric perturbations; to bless homes and livestock, to heal the sick and generally reassure frightened peasants.
Those evil geniuses: maidens riding among the clouds, are called Roussalka by Slavs and Romanians ; Walkyries by Germans and Fairies by the Celts.
